Nimrod, Green Day broadens its musical scope

Released in 1997, three years after Dookie, Nimrod saw Green Day move beyond the punk rock framework that had driven their breakthrough. The band retained its energy while exploring a considerably wider range of sounds and formats throughout the album.

The record includes Hitchin' a Ride, Nice Guys Finish Last, Redundant and, most famously, Good Riddance (Time of Your Life). Built around acoustic guitar and strings, the latter became one of Green Day's best-known songs despite sounding markedly different from the music that had propelled the band to international success with Dookie.

Why “Nimrod”?

The English word nimrod has a rather unusual history. Originally, Nimrod is a biblical figure described as a mighty hunter. In American English, however, the word eventually developed a mocking meaning and can be used to describe a foolish or stupid person.

This double meaning gives the album title its offbeat character. The original cover takes the concept further by hiding the faces of two men behind circles bearing the word “nimrod.”. The artwork on this patch crops the composition to feature one of those two figures.
