My Name Is: the track that introduced Slim Shady to the world

Released in January 1999, My Name Is was the first single from The Slim Shady LP. From its chorus, built around the repeated phrase “Hi! My name is…”, Eminem introduced the wider public to Slim Shady, the provocative alter ego he had begun developing before recording the album.

The track became one of his first major international hits and paved the way for the release of The Slim Shady LP a few weeks later.

From Marshall Mathers to Slim Shady

The Slim Shady character predates the 1999 album, notably appearing on the Slim Shady EP in 1997. The alter ego gave Eminem a distinct voice and persona that became central to much of his writing during this period.

The patch plays directly with this dual identity: rather than simply displaying the Eminem name, it uses the familiar name-tag format to announce “My Name Is Slim Shady”.

My Name Is was produced by Dr. Dre and samples I Got The..., a track released by Labi Siffre in 1975. Eminem's meeting with Dr. Dre proved decisive for his career and led to the recording of The Slim Shady LP.

Another curiosity often noted about the track: when played backwards, the “My name is” line in the chorus can sound like “It's Eminem”. A particularly amusing sonic coincidence for a song built around Eminem's identity and his Slim Shady alter ego.
