A photograph that became legendary

Taken by photographer Pennie Smith during a concert at New York's Palladium in 1979, the image captures the exact moment Paul Simonon destroyed his Fender Precision Bass in frustration. Although initially considered too blurry for an album cover, it went on to become one of the most celebrated photographs in rock history.

Designer Ray Lowry deliberately borrowed the pink and green typography from Elvis Presley's debut album, creating a striking visual link between the birth of rock'n'roll and the explosive spirit of British punk.

Released in 1979, London Calling pushed far beyond traditional punk by blending rock, reggae, ska, dub, rockabilly and soul. Widely regarded as one of the greatest albums ever recorded, it includes timeless classics such as London Calling, Train in Vain, Spanish Bombs and Clampdown.
