This official The Beatles iron-on patch features the famous Rubber Soul lettering, with its stretched and distorted orange letters against a black background. The patch is cut to follow the irregular contours of the design associated with the 1965 album.

Rubber Soul, a turning point for The Beatles

Released in the UK on 3 December 1965, Rubber Soul marked a major step in the evolution of The Beatles. The band moved increasingly beyond the pop sound of their early years and considerably expanded their songwriting and musical palette, with tracks including Drive My Car, Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown), Nowhere Man, Michelle and In My Life.

This musical evolution was accompanied by an equally unusual album cover: the band's name does not appear on the front. The four Beatles and the Rubber Soul title were now enough to identify the album.

Lettering created for the 1965 album cover

The Rubber Soul title was designed by Charles Front. Its thick, stretched letters complement the distorted photograph of The Beatles taken by Robert Freeman, who had already created several of the band's album covers.

The orange lettering became one of the cover's most recognisable elements. This patch isolates the design itself, reproducing its distinctive shape, irregular proportions and colour.

💡 Did you know?

The distorted effect used on the Rubber Soul cover came about almost by accident. During a presentation to the band, Robert Freeman was projecting his photographs onto a piece of white cardboard. When the cardboard tilted slightly, the projected image stretched and distorted. The Beatles immediately liked the result and decided to retain the effect for the album cover.
