This official The Beatles sew-on patch brings together portraits of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr in a black and grey composition. REVOLUTION dominates the lower section in red lettering, with several reversed or altered characters visually reminiscent of the Cyrillic alphabet. A BACK IN THE USSR panel appears at the centre of the design.

Revolution, the song John Lennon wanted as a single

Revolution emerged against the particularly turbulent political background of 1968. Written primarily by John Lennon, the song directly addresses revolution and political change while distancing itself from violence as a means of achieving it.

Lennon wanted the song released as a single, but the first version recorded by The Beatles was considered too slow. The band subsequently recorded a new, much faster and heavily distorted performance: this version of Revolution was released in August 1968 as the B-side of Hey Jude.

Revolution, Revolution 1 and Revolution 9

The original performance did not disappear. Reworked as Revolution 1, it appeared a few months later on The Beatles, the double album commonly known as the White Album.

The extended experiments developed from this earlier version also contributed to the creation of Revolution 9, the experimental sound collage produced primarily by John Lennon with George Harrison and Yoko Ono. The Beatles therefore released three recordings sharing the same creative origins in 1968: Revolution, Revolution 1 and Revolution 9.

A design linking Revolution and Back in the U.S.S.R.

The patch brings together two Beatles songs recorded in 1968. The BACK IN THE USSR panel sits alongside REVOLUTION, with several letters in the latter reversed or altered to visually evoke the Cyrillic alphabet.

This treatment gives REVOLUTION a Russian-inspired appearance and creates a direct graphic connection with the reference to the USSR immediately above it.

💡 Did you know?

The unusually aggressive guitar sound on the single version of Revolution was created by deliberately pushing the recording signal into extreme distortion at Abbey Road. The heavily saturated result was unusual for a Beatles recording in 1968 and was specifically sought to give the track its abrasive character.
