The performances were recorded on 30 August 1972 during the two One to One benefit concerts at Madison Square Garden. Backed by Elephant's Memory and joined by Yoko Ono, Lennon performed solo classics alongside several Beatles songs for a packed New York audience.

The recordings remained unreleased for years before finally appearing in 1986 as Live in New York City, becoming John Lennon's only official full live album released after his death.
