This official The Beatles iron-on patch is entirely dedicated to Back in the U.S.S.R. Its red, white and black design divides the title into two sections: BACK fills the upper half, while USSR appears in white against a red background below.

The song that opens the White Album

Back in the U.S.S.R. opens The Beatles, the double album released on 22 November 1968 and universally known as the White Album. Written primarily by Paul McCartney, the track begins and ends with the sound of an aircraft, which also provides the transition into Dear Prudence.

McCartney conceived the song as a twist on Chuck Berry's Back in the U.S.A.: instead of celebrating a return to the United States, the narrator is delighted to be returning to the Soviet Union.

A nod to the Beach Boys

The American references extend beyond Chuck Berry. The vocal harmonies and lyrics celebrating girls from Ukraine, Moscow and Georgia also parody the world of the Beach Boys, particularly California Girls.

McCartney had discussed the idea with Mike Love of the Beach Boys during The Beatles' stay in India in 1968. Love suggested mentioning different parts of the Soviet Union, echoing the different regions of the United States celebrated in California Girls.

💡 Did you know?

Back in the U.S.S.R. was recorded while Ringo Starr had temporarily left The Beatles following tensions during the White Album sessions. The remaining three continued without him: Paul McCartney, John Lennon and George Harrison all contributed to the drum parts heard on the finished recording.

When Ringo returned a few days later, he found his drum kit decorated with flowers by George Harrison to welcome him back.
