Queen – Logo Flag: Freddie Mercury's Famous Queen Crest

This Queen – Logo flag features the famous Queen Crest, the emblem created by Freddie Mercury during the band's early years. Set against a black background, lions, fairies, a crab, crown and phoenix form the elaborate gold and red crest above the Queen name in red.

Freddie Mercury did more than give the band its name. A former art and design student, he created the emblem himself around 1972-1973. The Queen Crest already appeared on the back of Queen's self-titled debut album in 1973 and went on to become one of the band's defining visual symbols.

What Do the Animals on the Queen Logo Mean?

Freddie Mercury built the crest around the zodiac signs of Queen's four members. The two lions represent Roger Taylor and John Deacon, both Leos. The crab represents Brian May, a Cancer, while the two fairies represent Freddie Mercury, a Virgo.

The figures surround a large stylised letter Q containing a crown. Above them, an enormous phoenix spreads its wings across the top of the composition.

The result is an elaborate, theatrical rock crest that became closely associated with Queen's visual identity.

An Emblem from Queen's Earliest Years

The Queen Crest accompanied the band from their debut album onwards and appeared in several variations throughout their career. This full-colour version highlights the many elements of Mercury's design: the red Q, central crown, two lions, fairies, crab and the spectacular phoenix above them.
