This Jimi Hendrix Experience – Are You Experienced flag reproduces the psychedelic artwork created for the North American edition of the trio's debut album. Against a striking yellow background, Jimi Hendrix, Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell appear inside a circular photograph surrounded by the famous purple lettering.

Its saturated colours and unmistakably psychedelic design capture the visual explosion of 1967.

Are You Experienced: the Jimi Hendrix Experience debut

Released in 1967, Are You Experienced is the debut album by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, the power trio featuring Jimi Hendrix on guitar and vocals, Noel Redding on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums.

The album was first released in the UK before a different North American edition appeared a few months later. This version notably replaced three tracks from the British release with Purple Haze, Hey Joe and The Wind Cries Mary, three singles previously released in the UK.

Karl Ferris' psychedelic cover

For the American edition, Hendrix wanted to replace the original British sleeve with something far more psychedelic. Photographer Karl Ferris, whose experimental work had impressed Hendrix, was brought in to create the new image.

Ferris photographed the band at Kew Gardens in London, using a fisheye lens and his psychedelic colour infrared technique. Jimi Hendrix stands at the centre between Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell, surrounded by deliberately surreal colours.

Ferris also chose the striking yellow background and psychedelic lettering that gave this edition of Are You Experienced its distinctive visual identity.

Did you know?

The photo session also helped create a unified visual identity for the trio. After seeing Hendrix with his hair styled into an afro, Karl Ferris wanted to retain the look for the shoot. Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell then adopted similar hairstyles.

The photograph ultimately selected for the American album cover was actually the first shot taken during the session at Kew Gardens.
