Iron Maiden Flag – Powerslave

This Iron Maiden – Powerslave flag reproduces the famous artwork created by Derek Riggs for the band's fifth album. Eddie appears as a gigantic pharaoh enthroned within a monumental temple, surrounded by sphinxes, Ancient Egyptian-inspired statues and a pyramid struck by lightning.

With its blue, gold and ochre colours and colossal architecture, Powerslave features one of the most instantly recognisable covers in Iron Maiden's entire catalogue.

Powerslave: Iron Maiden in 1984

Released on 3 September 1984, Powerslave is Iron Maiden's fifth studio album. It includes the singles Aces High and 2 Minutes to Midnight, alongside the title track Powerslave and the 13-minute epic Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

The latter, written by Steve Harris, was inspired by Samuel Taylor Coleridge's famous poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, first published in the late 18th century.

The album led to the enormous World Slavery Tour of 1984-1985. The tour was later immortalised on Live After Death, directly connecting two of the most famous visual eras in Iron Maiden history.

Eddie becomes a pharaoh

Derek Riggs' Egyptian setting directly reflects Powerslave, the title track written by Bruce Dickinson. Its lyrics take the perspective of a pharaoh once regarded as divine but now forced to confront his own mortality.

On the album cover, Eddie therefore literally takes the place of a monumental deity. Seated at the centre of the temple and dressed as a pharaoh, he towers over an architectural landscape filled with sphinxes and figures inspired by Ancient Egypt.

Did you know?

Derek Riggs hid several tiny messages and jokes throughout the enormous Powerslave artwork. These include the inscriptions “Bollocks” and “Indiana Jones was here”, details that are almost impossible to notice at first glance.

Hiding signatures, symbols and jokes within his illustrations became one of the features that made exploring classic Iron Maiden covers so much fun for fans.
