System of a Down – Hand – Band – 1998

Inside the world of System of a Down's debut album 🖐️

This official System of a Down 5-button badge set is based on the visual identity of the band's self-titled debut album, released in 1998. The five 1" (25mm) badges feature variations on the album's hand artwork, System of a Down lettering and band portraits in the same black, ochre and white style.

At the centre of the set, the open hand with System of a Down lettering directly references the main element of the album cover. The four surrounding badges feature different images of the band members using the same distinctive visual treatment.

A hand that predates System of a Down

The famous hand on the album cover originates from a political poster created in 1928 by German artist John Heartfield for the Communist Party of Germany. The original image was accompanied by the German slogan “5 Finger hat die Hand” (“The hand has five fingers”).

Seventy years later, System of a Down used the image for their debut album. Released in 1998, the record includes tracks such as Sugar, Spiders and War?, establishing the band's distinctive musical and visual identity.
