Everything about Slayer: biography, style & influences

Bannière Slayer

Thrash Metal

Slayer, founded in California in 1981 by Kerry King, Tom Araya, Jeff Hanneman and Dave Lombardo, embodies one of the most uncompromising forms of heavy metal. From the very beginning, the band established an extreme identity built on razor-sharp riffs, relentless speed and a dark atmosphere that helped shape thrash metal.

With landmark albums such as Reign in Blood, South of Heaven and Seasons in the Abyss, Slayer pushed the genre to new extremes and forged a sound of their own. Their place within the “Big Four”, alongside Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax, confirms their status as one of the defining forces in metal history.

Their instantly recognizable visual identity is built on strong codes: angular logos, dark symbolism, violent imagery and occult references. This aesthetic, as influential as their music, left a lasting mark on death metal and extreme metal as a whole. This visual legacy is explored further in our dedicated Slayer patch guide, focused on their place in metal patch culture.

Despite Jeff Hanneman’s passing in 2013 and a farewell tour in 2019, Slayer’s impact remains untouchable. Their legacy still resonates across generations of fans through sheer intensity and influence.
