Everything about Nirvana: biography, style & influences

Bannière Nirvana

Alternative Rock

Nirvana, an iconic symbol of grunge and alternative rock in the 1990s, was formed in 1987 in Aberdeen, Washington by Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic. The band quickly established a raw and emotional sound, blending pop melodies with punk intensity. Their debut album, Bleach (1989), released on Sub Pop, reflects the dark and minimalist energy of the Seattle underground scene.

The impact of Nevermind (1991)

In 1990, drummer Dave Grohl joined the band, bringing power and precision. The following year, Nirvana released Nevermind, an album that reshaped the global music landscape. The single Smells Like Teen Spirit became an anthem for a generation, turning the band into a cultural phenomenon. With over 30 million copies sold, Nevermind made grunge a worldwide movement.

In Utero (1993) and a return to raw sound

Produced by Steve Albini, In Utero introduced a more abrasive and introspective direction. Songs like Heart-Shaped Box and Rape Me reflect a band seeking authenticity while rejecting mainstream expectations.

A tragic end, a lasting legacy

On April 5, 1994, Kurt Cobain tragically passed away in Seattle. Nirvana disbanded shortly after, yet their legacy remains immense: over 75 million albums sold, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, and a lasting influence on bands such as Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age.

Discography and legacy

From Bleach (1989) to In Utero (1993), including the iconic Nevermind, each album reshaped modern rock. Releases like MTV Unplugged in New York and Incesticide continue to attract new generations of listeners.
