Everything about Gojira: biography, style & influences

Gojira is a French progressive and extreme metal band formed in Bayonne in 1996 by brothers Joe (vocals, guitar) and Mario Duplantier (drums). Originally known as Godzilla, the band quickly stood out with a technical, atmospheric and deeply engaged approach, rooted in death metal while pushing its boundaries further.
Their debut album Terra Incognita (2001) introduced a dense and innovative sound. With From Mars to Sirius (2005), Gojira reached a new level: massive riffs, complex structures and conscious themes made the album a landmark in modern metal. The Way of All Flesh (2008) and L’Enfant Sauvage (2012) confirmed their global impact, while Magma (2016) and Fortitude (2021) explored a more emotional and introspective side.
Renowned for their technical precision and intense live performances, the band stands alongside acts like Meshuggah, Opeth and Tool, all sharing a complex and immersive approach to metal.
Their performance at the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games confirmed their status as global ambassadors of French metal.
