Bannière Dead Kennedys

Punk

Dead Kennedys stand as one of the defining bands of American hardcore punk. Formed in 1978 in San Francisco and fronted by the charismatic Jello Biafra, the group became known for its biting political lyrics, dark humor, and sharp social critique.

Their debut album Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables (1980) featured classics like “California Über Alles” and “Holiday in Cambodia” — instant protest anthems combining speed, sarcasm, and defiant energy. Their sound was raw yet articulate, a blend of anger and intellect that defined a generation of punks.

Outspoken against authoritarianism, consumerism, and moral hypocrisy, the Dead Kennedys established a radical visual and lyrical identity, making their artwork and message as powerful as their riffs.

Though they disbanded in 1986, their influence endures. Since the 2000s, the band’s remaining members have continued performing under the same name — without Biafra — keeping the rebellious spirit of the original lineup alive.
