Candlemass are one of the undisputed pioneers of epic doom metal. Formed in 1984 in Stockholm by bassist Leif Edling, the band forged a heavy, slow and majestic sound inspired by Black Sabbath, but enriched with melodic and theatrical grandeur.

Their debut album Epicus Doomicus Metallicus (1986) introduced a dark and monumental atmosphere, driven by Johan Längqvist’s dramatic vocals and crushing riffs. It became a cornerstone of the doom genre. Their fame grew further with Messiah Marcolin, whose powerful operatic tone and monk-like presence became iconic. With him, the band released a series of masterpieces: Nightfall (1987), Ancient Dreams (1988) and Tales of Creation (1989).

Through lineup changes and reunions, Candlemass have remained true to their unmistakable sound. In 2022, they returned with Sweet Evil Sun, praised for its emotional depth and cohesion. Their legacy continues to shape the European metal scene.
