Bannière Alice in Chains

Alternative Rock

Formed in 1987 in Seattle, Alice in Chains stands as one of the most iconic bands in alternative rock and metal history. Defined by the haunting dual vocals of Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell, their music blends grunge melancholy with heavy metal power, creating a dark, emotional and timeless sound.

The golden age of grunge

Their debut album Facelift (1990) introduced a brooding, heavy sound that set them apart from their Seattle peers. In 1992, Dirt became their masterpiece, featuring iconic songs like “Would?”, “Rooster” and “Them Bones.” With Jar of Flies (1994) — the first acoustic EP ever to reach No. 1 on the US charts — Alice in Chains revealed a more fragile, introspective side, balancing melancholy with raw power.

Tragedy and rebirth

The death of Layne Staley in 2002 temporarily ended the band’s story. Yet in 2006, Jerry Cantrell and Sean Kinney revived Alice in Chains with new vocalist William DuVall. Their comeback albums, including Black Gives Way to Blue (2009), The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here (2013) and Rainier Fog (2018), proved their lasting creative force and emotional depth.

A legacy shared with Seattle’s legends

Together with Nirvana and Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains represents the darker, more introspective side of Seattle’s musical revolution. Their influence continues to echo across modern metal and alternative rock scenes worldwide.
